Special Are You!

Bless the Lord, all you his chosen ones,
and may all of you praise his majesty.
Celebrate days of gladness, and give God praise.

Tobit 13:8

Though it was decades ago, I fondly recall watching Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood with my sons. It never ceased to amaze me that the mild-mannered Fred Rogers could captivate Mike and Tim for the duration of his show. The truth is that I enjoyed each episode as much as my sons did, maybe more so.

I say this because, when I became a parent, I understood the importance of feeling special and important, wanted and cherished, more than my sons did. I think their dad and I did a reasonably good job of making them feel loved because they were and continue to be loved more than I can ever put into words. Still, regardless of the good efforts of those around us, many of us feel devalued, unwanted and unimportant. In spite of my parents’ best efforts, I recall my own childhood moments of dejection and loneliness. It was then that I vowed I would assure my future children that they are loved no matter what!

We all find ourselves rejected, seemingly unloved and steeped in loneliness at one time or another. In spite of the best efforts of others, we convince ourselves that there is no one who really cares about us. So it is that today I echo the words of the One who inspired Fred Rogers in the first place: Celebrate days of gladness and give God praise because YOU are God’s chosen one. YOU are loved by God even more than I love my sons and more than you will ever know until you meet face to face and God clears up any doubt you may have!

Loving God, thank you for choosing each one of us to be your precious child whom gift with your absolute and enduring love. Remind us of this love often, especially when this world tries to convince us otherwise.

  1. Steve had a little trouble posting this comment, so I am doing so for him. His responses are always very thougthful and worthy of sharing…

Mary – Thanks for your thoughts today. Years ago, I read Stephen Covey’s book, “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People”. In this work, Dr. Covey wrote, quite simply, “Love is a decision”. Over the years, I have very often needed to remember this – and your text today is yet one more reminder that acting with love is often (usually?) not our first response under all circumstances (we are human after all). But our conscious decision to act with love, in whatever measure that may be needed at the moment, is what can lift up ourselves and those around us. Thank you for this reminder today – I needed it! As always, thanks. Steve
