Living Gratefully

Let all your works give you thanks, O Lord,
and let your faithful ones bless you.

Psalm 145:10

This occurs occasionally and without explanation. Unexpected feelings of gratitude overwhelm me. I’m a creature of habit who walks the same route every single time I venture outdoors. Still, the blue of the sky or changes in the trees which I’ve seen a hundred times before fill me with awe. The familiar green branches looming overhead reveal new knots and gnarly twists every time I pass under them. Chirping birds provide the frosting on the cake. Even drizzling rain gives me reason to be grateful.

Perhaps I’ve been an unwitting student of Creation’s wisdom during these treks outdoors. Perhaps the gently clouded sky that beckons my eyes toward heaven and the trees which continuously raise their arms upward are reminding me to do the same. Their very existence points to God’s glory. And then there are those people I’ve been given to love…

Perhaps my existence on this earth is meant to point others in heaven’s direction as well. Like Nature around me, perhaps I’m meant to do everything I do with a spirit of gratitude. After all, being a part of God’s creation is a privilege and honor and something for which to be extremely grateful.

Generous God, when I appreciate what I have, it’s easy to share my gifts with others. Help me to do so generously.

The Right Umbrella

When the afflicted man called out, the Lord heard,
and from all his distress he saved him.

Psalm 34:7

It’s raining again. The downpour the other day didn’t keep me indoors, and I’ve decided the same will be true today. I’ve donned my hooded jacket and embarked upon my familiar trek through the neighborhood. As I walk, I enjoy the blurry perspective which persistent drops force upon me. As I walk further, it occurs to me that the emotional rains which fall too often in our lives are not as enjoyable.

A teen I know and love is enduring some tough times. Though the storm brewing overhead is partially this young ones choice, those who care are doing their best to provide the right umbrella to keep this kid dry. In the mean time, I find myself discouraged. Just as I can’t do a thing about today’s rainy forecast, I feel at a loss in this case. What can I do to help?

As I consider the lifetime of storms I’ve endured, I must acknowledge that those who loved me through these things proved to be great blessings simply by being there. Perhaps I can be of help by doing the same.

Rain falls in our lives far too often. When it does, we simply do our best to determine which umbrella will keep our loved ones dry.

Compassionate God, keep this teen and all concerned in your care. Give them the strength to face all that lies ahead. Give them the peace to endure, knowing that you are with them every step of the way.

Ever Grateful

Let all your works give you thanks, O Lord,
and let your faithful ones bless you.

Psalm 145:10

Perhaps I feel this way because I helped to host a wonderful baby shower in anticipation of our newest grandchild-to-be. Having so many wonderful people with whom to share my joy and gratitude for this baby is truly uplifting. On this morning’s walk, as soon as I established my pace, feelings of gratitude overwhelmed me. Now I admit that I am a creature of habit who walks the same route every single time I venture out. Still, the blue of the sky or changes in the trees which I’ve seen a hundred times fill me with awe. The familiar green branches looming overhead reveal new knots and gnarls every time I pass under them. Chirping birds provide the frosting on the cake. Even drizzling rain gives me reason to feel grateful.

Perhaps I have been an unwitting student of Creation’s wisdom during these treks outdoors. Perhaps the clouded blue sky that beckons my eyes toward heaven and the trees who continuously raise their arms upward are reminding me to do the same. Their very existence points to God’s glory. And then there is that grandbaby… Perhaps my existence on this earth is meant to point others in heaven’s direction as well. Like Nature around me, perhaps I am meant to do everything I do with a spirit of gratitude. After all, being a part of God’s creation is a privilege and honor and something for which to be extemely grateful.

Generous God, help me to live with a grateful heart. When I appreciate what I have, it is easy to share my gifts with others. Help me to do so generously.
